Weekly Update (Sep 14): Opening $4,000 of Spider-Man Collector Boosters

Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |

This week in Magic finance was oddly quiet. The biggest gainer was classic meme deck uncommon Zombie Infestation (of Zombie Hunt fame), with the Odyssey printing jumping from around $1 to $4 this week. The enchantment seems like a solid support card for mayhem Commander decks, offering a free discard outlet that even leaves behind a body, which is what seems to be driving its current price spike. The good news is the card has a ton of reprints, many of which are still around $0.25, so if you aren’t picky, you can still snag copies for your decks on the cheap.
Speaking of Commander, Seize the Spotlight has more than doubled from $5 to $11 over the past few weeks, and I mostly blame Tomer for this for calling out the card as a sleeper on a recent podcast—although I think he’s right. Streets of New Capenna Commander has a ton of hidden gems, and the red rare might be another one. If everyone chooses fortune, you end up with a free draw three thanks to the Treasures, which is obviously super strong. The trick is to have some sort of sac outlet on the battlefield to discourage opponents from picking fame, because if they donate you a creature temporarily, you’ll be able to get rid of it permanently by sacrificing it. As such, Seize the Spotlight might not go in every red deck, but if you can support it, the effect is actually quite strong.
Finally, the prices of Spider-Man collector booster boxes are crashing. At one point towards the end of August, the boxes peaked at over $950, and now they are down to $690 and falling. The best I can tell, Spider-Man boosters were priced correctly when they were first announced at around $500, but then Final Fantasy happened and sellers—and perhaps some scalpers—jacked up prices on Spider-Man boxes. Now that the entire set is out, it’s pretty clear that Spider-Man is not Final Fantasy and doesn’t have anywhere near enough value to support a $900 box price. I opened five collector boxes for a video and averaged $400 in value per box, which is fine if you are paying $500 a box, but not so much at $800 or $900. I think boxes are very likely to drop down towards $500 again just based on the set itself, and if the online reaction carries over into the real world and the set actually is unpopular, they could go even lower. If you want collector boxes, I’d wait a bit longer, because prices seem to be dropping quickly, going from $840 to $690 in just the past few days.
