Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance is mostly driven by some super-early Marvel Super Heroes spoilers. The old artifact Caltrops jumped around 400% to $20 thanks to Bruce Banner / The Incredible Hulk. If you can get The Incredible Hulk on the battlefield, Caltrops lets you attack infinitely thanks to Hulk’s enrage ability. While Caltrops does seem legit in The Incredible Hulk, I’m not buying its current price. Before the buyout, the artifact was $4, and completed listings suggest players are willing to pay around $12 for it today, which seems like a reasonable landing spot. Marvel Super Heroes doesn’t even release until June, so I’d wait a few weeks for the initial spoiler hype to die down and prices to normalize before snagging your copies.
Meanwhile, the old Alliances Reserved List artifact Ashnod's Cylix was bought out and spiked more than 600% to $8, but no one seems to know why. Paying two mana to get Ashnod's Cylix on the battlefield and three more for what looks like a worse version of scry three seems… not great. According to TCGplayer, only a couple of copies have sold since the spike, which might mean this is just a targeted buyout in hopes of inflating the card’s price and then offloading copies for a profit. This one feels safe to ignore.
Finally, in Standard we saw some massive price movement from cards in the Izzet Lessons deck that dominated Worlds last weekend. Monument to Endurance (extended) jumped 33% to $20, Artist's Talent 4% to $4, Riverpyre Verge (borderless) and Multiversal Passage (borderless) about 29% to around $20, and Stormchaser's Talent 25% to $17. When you add it all together, the Izzet Lessons deck—mostly built around commons and uncommons from the latest set—now costs around $500, with some builds hitting $600. It turns out that being the perceived best deck in Standard is still enough to send prices skyward, even in the current era where Commander is king and a big chunk of 60-card play happens digitally.
