Much Abrew: Ultra-Boomer Blood Moon Jund (Modern)


Hello, everyone! Welcome to another episode of Much Abrew About NothingThis week, we got a surprise banlist update for Modern, with Lurrus of the Dream-Den's nine lives finally running out. The question now is if the Cat Nightmare's banning and three-drops coming off the shadow banlist as a result means the Modern format is fixed. There's only one true way to find out: play the boomeriest version of Jund possible, complete with main-deck Blood Moon, and see if it can keep up with the current Modern format. If Ultra-Boomer Blood Moon Jund is good, it's a pretty safe bet that Modern is in a good place, but is it good? Let's get to the video and find out on this week's Much Abrew About Nothing

  • Record-wise, Ultra-Boomer Blood Moon Jund did well. We finished our league 4-1, with our only loss coming in a tough three-game match to Affinity, which managed to chain together enough card draw to fight through our two-for-ones. We also did this in the most Jund way possible: with every match being super close and going the full three games. It wasn't easy or pretty, but it worked!
  • As you probably know, Blood Moon doesn't traditionally see play in Jund, although it can work if you build the mana base in the right way. (If you look at our deck, you'll see it's mostly fetch lands and basics, with very few true dual lands). Including it in the deck is partly a shout-out to my love of Blood Moon, but the enchantment also seems well-positioned in our new Modern format, as many players expect Primeval Titan decks, Tron, and friends to be on the rise since they didn't lose anything from the Lurrus banning. We had some games where it was absurd, stealing free wins, but there were also some matches where we sideboarded it out because it didn't do much in the matchup, which is normally how Blood Moon works. Is it worth it in the long term in Jund? We'll have to see, but in general, I was happy with where our deck landed.
  • So, is Modern fixed now that Lurrus of the Dream-Den is banned? I think it's much improved, at the very least. Being able to play three- and four-drops again is liberating. We played against a diverse set of matches (five different decks in five rounds) and it's definitely refreshing to not see Lurrus staring back at us more than 30% of the time. Plus, we managed to post a solid record with a Jund deck that didn't include any Modern Horizons 2 cards and just a single Modern Horizons 1 card (Wrenn and Six, which was only a two-of), which is a great sign. Only time will tell for sure, but for now, Modern seems to be trending in the right direction and in a really fun place.
