Much Abrew About Nothing: Modern Angel Moon

Hello everyone! Welcome to the new and improved Much Abrew About Nothing. We've started doing Instant Deck Techs every day on the YouTube channel, with the idea being that whichever deck is most popular will get made into videos each week! I decided that the easiest way to feature the winning deck would be to play the matches under the Much Abrew About Nothing banner. This change does not mean we'll only see Instant Deck Tech decks on Much Abrew, but it does mean we'll be getting an episode of Much Abrew About Nothing at least once each week on Sunday nights! First up is Angel Moon for Modern!

A quick reminder. If you enjoy the Much Abrew About Nothing series and the other video content on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up on all the latest and greatest.

Thoughts

  • Playing a couple of matches with the deck pretty much confirmed my suspicions: Blood Moon and Leyline of Sanctity are the reasons to play the deck. In matches where one (or both) of these powerful enchantments are good, the deck is good. In matches where neither enchantment is good, the deck struggles, in no small part because it ends up with a lot of dead main deck cards. Second, it means the Angels are not at all essential to the deck. They are simply big, evasive finishers, and could be replaced by creatures of any type. Actually, the deck might be better if it was using Dragons (e.g. Thundermaw Hellkite) to close out the game instead of Angels.
  • A lot of the deck's opening hands look awful, which is a side effect of playing a creature curve that doesn't start until turn four. Almost every opening hand we had over the course of our matches looked awful, and I think those openers are normal for the deck. Get use to keeping hands that seem slow and sub-par and hope you can overcome the clunkiness.
  • While Riot Control and Dawn Charm did keep us alive in some situations, I almost always wanted these cards to be mana ramp than Fog effects. If I was going to keep playing the deck, I'd definitely fit in some Boros Signets to jump the curve and start playing our expensive Angels earlier.
  • I'm pretty confident that Sudden Shock should be Lightning Bolt. While split second is technically an upside, I'm not sure it was relevant in any of our matches.
  • Overall, I like the deck and found it fun to play, but to be competitive it really needs some tuning. I'm just not convinced that a Modern deck can be successful playing all four, five, six, and seven-drop creatures with no ramp. The Leyline of Sanctity/Blood Moon shell is great, but I'm not sure that tribal Angels is the best way to take advantage of its power.

Conclusion

The bannings will weaken Izzet but Izzet has so many good cards that I think it'll still be a top tier deck thanks to efficient answers like Into the Floodmaw and powerhouses like Proft's Eidetic Memory!
