Modern Horizons 3 Exclusive Preview: Consuming Corruption!

Today I'm excited to reveal our free preview card from Modern Horizons 3: check out Consuming Corruption!

Consuming Corruption is a massive upgrade to Tendrils of Corruption, a card that I have fond memories of playing a decade ago in Pauper. Compared to Tendrils, Consuming Corruption costs half as much mana and can also target planeswalkers.

Finding a home for Consuming Corruption in Modern may be tricky: the only current popular deck that can support the amount of Swamps it needs to be effective is Mono Black Coffers, where it's possible that it can take the spot of March of Wretched Sorrow for mid/lategame spot removal with lifegain attached. Otherwise we would probably need a green-based land ramp deck running a playset of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to really take advantage of this card.

However, there's always a home for niche cards in Commander! Consuming Corruption slots in perfectly into Mono Black decks, particularly ones that benefit from lifegain: two that immediately spring to mind are K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth which can cast this for zero mana and then immediately regain the spent life, or the new Kaervek, the Punisher where it both triggers his ability and offsets its lifeloss.

Personally, I'm jamming Consuming Corruption in my Toshiro Umezawa deck since I run a ton of land ramp and it being an instant is highly relevant!

Thanks For Reading!

And thank you to Wizards of the Coast for the free preview card!
