Meme or Dream? I Spent All My Wildcards on Legally Distinct Spider People (Standard)

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Meme or Dream?, the series where we take decks published on Magic.gg that apparently got 6 or more wins in a row at platinum rank or better on Magic Arena and put them to the test to find out if they are just as janky as they look, making them a meme, or if there's something spectacular hiding behind the jank exterior making it a dream! As far as I can tell, today's deck was built by someone who spent all of their wildcards on legally distinct spider-people, threw them all into the same deck and then apparently went on an epic win streak, but on paper the deck looks super janky. There are literally zero spells in the deck, which means we have no real removal, and we're overloaded with random legendary spider-people, which seems like it could lead to some clunky draws. Oh yeah, it's also five-color, which means the mana might be a challenge. On the other hand, there are a bunch of spider payoffs in Standard, so maybe the deck will play better than it looks. Is spending all of your wildcards on spider-people a meme or a dream? Let's get to the video and find out!

Wrap Up

So yeah, apparently legally distinct Spider-people are actually pretty busted. Somehow we went 5-1 with the deck, taking down Izzet Cauldron and Dimir Midrange twice along the way, which clearly makes 5C Spiders a dream! While the deck looks super janky, it actually played really well. While none of our cards are super strong on their own, there are so many spider payoffs - Aunt May, Radioactive Spider, Spinneret and Spiderling, Mary Jane Watson, Spider-Punk, Cosmic Spider-Man - that the deck is surprisingly synergistic. It's also oddly aggressive. In a lot of our matches we simply curved out and outraced our opponent. The mana also worked shockingly well thanks to three different five-color lands. Really, my only criticism of the deck is the complete lack of instant-speed removal. The only removal in the deck is a few Sheltered by Ghosts in the sideboard, and in some matchups I found myself really wishing for a Get Lost or Shoot the Sheriff, although this problem should be easy enough to fix. Drop the Grow Extra Arms from the sideboard (I have no idea when we'd bring them in anyway), maybe trim back a Sheltered by Ghosts or two, and run a playset of an instant-speed hard removal spell in the sideboard and we should be good to go!

So should you spend all of your wildcards on spider-people? Somehow the answer might actually be yes, as strange as that sounds!

Anyway, that's all for today. As always, leave your thoughts, ideas, opinions and suggestions in the comments, and you can reach me on Twitter @SaffronOlive, or at SaffronOlive@MTGGoldfish.com
