Historic 101: Hateboar
With so many Jund Sacrifice decks running around the meta, I wanted to see if we could get enough soft lock pieces through our little hatebears and luckily MTGArena posted a list that seemed to do most of what I wanted. This list is slightly tweaked but for the most part is the posted list!
Gameplan
The deck plays like how you would imagine a Death & Taxes deck does in Historic. The creatures aren't the most threatening stat-wise but we play tons of light "lock" threats that are disruptive against the opponents by delaying noncreature spells with cards like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben or of course the big boar himself, Yasharn, Implacable Earth.
The big boar is great right now as I kept getting paired against Jund Sacrifice on and off the ladder. Between Jund Sac and Goblins, Yasharn is super disruptive as nullifying Jund's entire gameplan is huge! Against Goblins, Yasharn is able to shut off a Skirk Prospector to hopefully slow the games down a bit before the big Muxus. Of course the power level of this version of Taxes is much weaker as we are still missing cards like Leonin Arbiter and Gaddock Teeg but the deck does its best impersonation!
Zendikar Rising brought so many sweet new cards for the archetype! Skyclave Apparition is taking constructed formats by storm and its absolutely amazing. It gave the deck a clean way to deal with cards like Uro and whatever else sits around four mana or less. Another fun card to curve into is Archon of Emeria as the card taps our opponent's nonbasic lands while locking them into one spell a turn. This actually forces our opponents to play "fair magic" while further delaying our opponent's another turn to clear the way for our little two power friends!
Conclusion
The deck overperformed in the video because we got paired against a decent amount of Sacrifice decks but this deck is really meant to be aimed at a Jund Sac heavy meta. The deck does struggle against control unless you get that super sweet curve out. Sultai Control/Midrange has to be one of the toughest match ups as our tax effects just aren't noticeable to the Sultai opponent. The deck still lacks a good portion of what makes a Taxes deck enjoyable but a few more sets and maybe an Anthology, this deck could be a strong meta call!
As always, thanks for watching!
